Security Guard Requirements in Iowa

Iowa has a lot of universities, museums, and landmarks. Did you know that Iowa is one of the safest places to live?  I would like to say that part of the credit for this could go to the efforts of security guards! The Iowa Department of Public Safety manages all security guard licensing. If you want to be a security guard in the Hawk-Eye State, you must first be employed by an Iowa-licensed security guard agency.  Following are additional security guard requirements in Iowa.

Unarmed Security Guard Requirements

To become an unarmed security guard in Iowa, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have no convictions of felonies, sexual offenses, or any crimes that would question the honesty and integrity of the person.
  • Maintain qualifications set and approved by the Iowa Department of Public Safety.
  • Provide a set of passport-style photos.
  • Also, provide a set of fingerprints on a standard FBI fingerprint card (please note that the date on the fingerprint card must match the hiring date).
  •  A security agency employee must have a background check.

There is no particular unarmed security guard training in Iowa. The Security Agency must have a license.

There is a $10.00 fee for registration. The application includes a temporary identification card, valid for up to 14 days. The employee will later receive a state-issued permanent card identification card. The employee identification card is agency specific. Currently, it is permissible for a security professional to be employed by more than one agency simultaneously. However, he or she will need to obtain a second identification card.

The total fee to become an unarmed security guard is $40.00.

Armed Security Guard Requirements 

If you want to become an armed security guard in Iowa, you must first gain employment with an Iowa security guard agency.

Besides meeting the above requirements, there are a few additional armed security guard requirements in Iowa which are:

  • You must be at least 21 years old.
  • Attain an NRA pistol permit and/or NRA range safety officer training.
  • Also, successfully complete firearm range qualification.

The total fee to become an armed security guard is $50.00.
