Unarmed Security Guard Requirements 

You have to get licensed by the Florida Department of Agriculture Division of Licensing to become a security guard.

Here are the requirements to become an unarmed security guard in Florida:

  • Successfully complete the Class D Security Officer License.
  • Complete 40-hours of state certified security guard training.
  • You must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident with an issued social security number.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Submit your fingerprints.
  • Submit a notarized application to the Florida Division of Licensing.
  • Also, submit two passport-style photos.
  • Finally, no criminal history and submit to a background check.

The classroom training for the Class D unarmed security guard license will include topics such as:

  • Legal issues
  • Proper emergency response
  • Patrol procedures and more

The total fee for licensing is $87.00, which includes:

  • $45.00 for Licensing
  • $42.00 for Fingerprints

Armed Security Guard Requirements

Next, to become an armed security guard in Florida, you will have to complete state-required armed security guard training. A licensing agency can only hire you after you have completed your training. Subsequently, you have to renew the armed security guard license every two years.

The security guard requirements – Florida for becoming an armed security guard are as follows:

  • You must be at least 21 years old.
  • Must file an application with the division.
  • Submit your fingerprint set using a standard FBI fingerprint card.
  • Have no convictions of any misdemeanors or felonies.
  • Also, successfully complete the state-required 28-hour armed training course. Furthermore, the course should be taught by a professional who holds a Class K License as a firearm instructor.

The training course includes the following topics:

  • Firearm safety and mechanics
  • Fundamentals of shooting
  • Civil liability and use of force
  • Use of deadly force
  • Handgun marksmanship
  • Care and maintenance of firearms
  • Other required armed security guard training

In addition, every year, you have to complete a minimum of 4 hours of firearms re-certification training. This training may be combined with any other health as well as training requirements.

The total licensing fee is $154.00.
