Security Guard Requirements in Colorado

If you want to be an unarmed security guard in Colorado, you must have a license from the State of Colorado. We are providing Security Guard Requirements – Colorado and other important information that you should know. The City Clerk’s office handles the security guard application.

Unarmed Security Guard Requirements 

The following requirements should be met in order to qualify for an unarmed security guard license:

  • You must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must be a resident of Colorado.
  • Must be a United States citizen or registered resident alien.
  • You must also have a valid Colorado driver’s license or state ID card.
  • Have a valid social security card.
  •  Provide a medical certificate (within 60 days of filing the security guard application). It should state that you are physically capable of performing the duties of a security guard. Only a physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant certified by the Colorado State Board of Medical Examiners can administer this certificate.
  •  Have proof of a background check, within 30 days after filing the security guard application. The application is from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is a Division of the Department of Public Safety or other recognized source.

If you carry a nightstick or mace you must show proof that you are in compliance of Regulation No. 7.  No 7 compliance also applies if you carry a knife.  In addition, there are specific rules as to the length of the blade and the nightstick. Lastly, the use of mace is also based on these specific regulations.

Other Helpful Requirements:

  • Driver’s license
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Great communication skills

Armed Security Guard Training Requirements

In order to be an armed security guard in the State of Colorado, you must apply for a license. You can only apply if you are currently a security guard. However, there are no specific requirements for carrying a firearm.

According to the Denver Excise and Licensing Department in 2007, any firearms requirements were removed. In addition, there are no statewide regulations.  Any additional regulations are handled at the county level.
